White Akita dog in Water

"A TRUE Akita Hobbyist is an enthusiast, one who loves and respects the breed and wishes
to share that with others."

  1. Stay away from Pet Shops. Pet shops have overhead, and are driven by commerce, as a result they tend to care more about numbers than the health of the puppy. Try to find someone the breeds because they want to not because they have to

  2. Ask for Referrals. Find other people with akitas who have had positive experiences with their Akita puppies and the Akita breeder they got it from and ask for a referral.

  3. Be Prepared to answer some questions. A good breeder will have an Application and/or questionaire to qualify you as a home for their Akita puppy. Finding the right homes for their Akita puppies is a top priority for a good breeder.
  4. Ask Questions
    • Ask if the parents are available to see for yourself.
    • Ask the breeders how many litters their Dam(s) (females) have per year.
    • Ask if they are breeding more than one type of dog. It is best to steer clear from those who are.
  5. Expect to pay a Deposit. One of the hardest things for a good breeder is to keep their puppies. A sign of a good breeder is one that has the akita puppies sold and spoken for before the litter is even born.
  6. Expect a Guarantee. A reputable breeder will guarantee that the puppy will be in good health, and offer a replacement or a refund in the event that it dies from genetic problems.
  7. Love for the breed. The best breeder is someone who loves the breed. A hobby breeder if you will, somone who breeds because they want to see improvements in the breed, and share the Akita breed with others. Not because they are looking for a paycheck. Responsible Akita breeders should be willing to take the Akita puppy back in the event that you can no longer keep it.
