Smart Akita playing in water

Here we have our Akita puppy, Aiko, playing in the water at the river. What makes this video great isn't just the fact that it captures an akita dog playing in the water but also that it was the first time Aiko learned an amazing trick. People don't stick there faces in the river to drink water, well smart akitas don't either. This 8 month old puppy learned he could bring the water up to his mouth by cutting the water with his paw.

He still uses this skill to this day, it is really amazing to see the intelligence of the Akita puppies at such a young age!

How to Crate train your Akita puppy.

Crate training an Akita puppy, is much like crate training any puppy. It is typically easier to crate train a large breed dog than it is a small breed dog. The following method is the result of trying just about every other crate training method out there.

How to house train/potty train your akita puppy with a crate:

  1. Buy an easy to clean crate with atleast two points of access/entry.
  2. Make sure the crate is not much bigger than your puppy. This is to keep them from going to the bathroom in one corner. If the crate is too large they will undoubtedly be comfortable urinating and deficating in one end while resting in the other end. Now, if you want to save money, and buy a crate to use as they grow into an adult, be sure to divide the crate into two parts. This will prevent the puppy from having full access. Crate training is much easier when the puppy is confined to a small area. The reason being is that the puppy will not fill comfortable in his own mess.
  3. Feed the dog and then take him outside straightway when he is done eating. Do the same when he drinks, let him stay outside for 10-15 minutes after eating and drinking. Be consistant with this to ensure he does not begin forming a habit of urinating and deficating in the home.

How to get your puppy to stay in a crate andd sleep in a crate without crying:

  1. Keep the crate near your bed.
  2. Keep a bottle of Lemon juice (little yellow bottle) on top of the crate.
  3. If the puppy whines open his mouth and spray a squirt of lemon juice inside.
  4. Repeat the lemon juice Application each time the puppy whines.
  5. Move the crate further from your room each night until it is located where you want it.

Now many people might think this is cruel, it is not. I believe it is more cruell to let a dog keep itself in misery and disappointment crying, and crying to be released, not knowing what joy and peace comes from learning to obey. So how long does it take for this method to work?

If your puppy doesn't become crate trained in one night I would be surprised, you may need to repeat the process briefly the following night, and then again the third night, but it is doubtful that it will take long at all. Whereas the alternate crate training method, of just locking them in the kennel, yelling, hitting, etc. Rarely produces the desire results without damaging the puppies spirit.
